Irrigation Cost Reduced Through Shifting Tubewell on-Biogas

As agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy and income source of 41% of
population of the country, the survival demands to put utmost efforts to increase the
production. So the poor farmers are compelled to expense huge amount to deal with the
issues hindering agriculture. Irrigation is done with using 16 to 36 Horse Power Peter
Engines on expensive diesel, Drip Irrigators which are also very expensive, and Petrol-rungenerators to overcome electricity issues, while both the diesel and petrol are increasing
their prices day by day. In these circumstances cost-effective techniques are extremely
required to provide relief to the poor farmers for increasing their production. Biogas is one
of the mitigating solutions as it has one-time installation cost on very reasonable prices

The proposed Biosmart Plant will help reduce the energy cost of agriculture tubewells and improve profitability of small and medium farms, hence poverty alleviation of farmers. The project would also create good impact on crop productivity by conversion of animal dung into high value organic fertilizer (“biogas slurry”).

The biogas manure/ slurry is produced through fermentation process which is enriched in Nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P), and Potash (K) compared with fresh manure / fertilizers. It is used as organic manure to improve soil health and enhance crop production leading to reduced consumption of mineral fertilizers. Experiments have shown incremental crop yield (10-20%) with biogas manure.

Environmental Benefit While wind and solar do not harm the environment, biogas improves
the environment:
Clean Water: Processes animal manure reducing pathogens and protecting source
water while capturing energy value
Clean Air/GHG Reduction: captures and uses methane a greenhouse gas that is 20
times worse than CO2; reduces odour in digestate (treated manure output)
Waste Diversion: diverts organic waste, including grease trap and other food
production, wastewater pretreatment residuals away from landfill while capturing
its energy
